This premium yarn-dyed cotton flannel fabric has a soft brushed surface combined with enough body to create garments with a defined, structured silhouette. Its classic woven plaid makes it especially well suited to fall and winter sewing, while the natural cotton fibre keeps the fabric comfortable and breathable.
Compared with a lightweight shirting flannel, this fabric has a more substantial feel, making it an excellent choice when you want the softness of flannel without losing shape. It works particularly well for overshirts, shirt jackets, casual jackets, structured shirts, skirts and dresses.
What Is Yarn-Dyed Flannel?
In a yarn-dyed fabric, the individual yarns are dyed before they are woven into cloth. The plaid pattern is therefore created by the woven structure itself rather than being printed onto the surface after weaving.
This gives the fabric greater visual depth and allows the plaid to remain visible on both sides of the cloth. It can be especially attractive for garments where the reverse side may occasionally show, such as rolled cuffs, open overshirts, unlined jackets or shirt hems.
The intersections between differently coloured yarns can also create subtle additional tones, which is one reason yarn-dyed plaids often have a richer and more dimensional appearance than printed versions.
Soft Brushed Surface
Flannel gets its characteristic softness from a brushing process that raises fine fibres from the surface of the fabric. This creates a warmer, softer hand while keeping the woven structure underneath stable.
The result is a fabric that feels comfortable against the skin but still has enough body for collars, cuffs, button plackets, pockets and other garment details that benefit from definition.
Because this flannel is more structured than fluid, it will not behave like viscose, rayon or a lightweight cotton lawn. Instead, it creates a cleaner silhouette and works best for patterns designed for medium to heavier woven fabrics.
Choosing Your Colour
- Dusty Plum: A muted plaid combining dusty plum, brown, cream and soft neutral tones for a subtle, earthy look.
- Walnut & Teal: A warm brown plaid accented with teal and lighter neutral lines for a classic but distinctive colour combination.
Working With Plaid Fabric
When sewing plaid garments, careful pattern placement can make a significant difference in the finished result. Aligning the main horizontal and vertical lines across seams creates a cleaner and more professional appearance.
Areas such as the centre front, side seams, patch pockets, yokes and sleeve placement are usually the most noticeable places to match the plaid.
For greater accuracy, you may prefer cutting your pattern pieces in a single layer rather than folding the fabric. This makes it easier to see exactly where each plaid line will fall and can help keep mirrored pieces symmetrical.
You can also use the plaid creatively by cutting smaller details such as pockets, cuffs or yokes on the bias. This changes the plaid from straight to diagonal and creates a subtle design feature without adding another fabric.
Allow Extra Fabric for Pattern Matching
When a sewing pattern gives fabric requirements for a plain fabric, consider purchasing additional yardage for plaid matching. Matching the design may require moving pattern pieces farther apart than you normally would.
The amount of extra fabric needed depends on the size of the plaid repeat, your garment size, the number of pattern pieces and how precisely you want the design to align.
Garments with patch pockets, multiple panels, button fronts or large collars generally require more careful placement than simple shapes.
Cutting Brushed Flannel
Because brushed fabrics have a slightly raised surface, the fabric can appear subtly different depending on the direction in which the fibres lie and how they reflect light.
For the most consistent appearance, we recommend cutting your main garment pieces in the same direction. Before cutting, check that the plaid is running straight across the fabric and take time to align your pattern pieces carefully.

Sewing Tips
A universal sewing machine needle is suitable for most projects made with this cotton flannel. Choose the needle size according to the number of fabric layers you are sewing, particularly around collars, cuffs, pockets and button bands.
Standard all-purpose polyester thread works well for garment construction. As with most woven fabrics, the raw edges can fray, so finishing your seam allowances with a serger, zigzag stitch or your preferred seam finish will help keep the inside of the garment neat.
Interfacing can be added to collars, cuffs, button plackets and other structured areas according to your sewing pattern. To preserve the soft character of the flannel, avoid using interfacing that is unnecessarily stiff.
Prewashing & Care
We recommend prewashing cotton flannel before cutting. Natural cotton fibres can change after washing, so prewashing allows this to happen before your garment is cut and sewn.
Wash the fabric using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment. After washing and drying, press the fabric before laying out your pattern pieces so the plaid and grain can be positioned accurately.
Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron at medium heat, preferably on the reverse side.
We recommend that you pre-wash your fabric the way you are going to wash your finished garment. Iron medium heat, preferably on reverse side.
Due to the different color variations of each monitor and mobile device, we cannot guarantee the color will exactly match what you see online.
